School Zones, Crosswalks and Railroads

School zones, crosswalks and railroad crossings are areas where it is very important for you to be fully aware of your surroundings. Here are some things to keep in mind:

School Zones

Speed limits are lower in school zones. Be alert at all times and look for children or other people that might suddenly step into the road. Make sure you follow the signs or flashing lights that warn drivers that they are approaching a school or school crossing.

Crosswalks

Crosswalks can be easily missed if you don't watch for them. Again, look for children or other people that might suddenly step into the road. Before turning at a crosswalk, stop, let all people cross, and then turn into the nearest lane. Some state laws actually require drivers to stop and allow all people in a crosswalk to cross. It's a good idea to become familiar with the laws of your state.

Railroad Crossings

It's important for all drivers to be very careful at railroad crossings. You can't just trust the lights or other cars in front of you. Instead, do the following:

  • Slow down - whether the lights are blinking or not.
  • Check your rearview mirror for traffic behind you.
  • LOOK and LISTEN for oncoming trains.
  • Determine the number of tracks. And check EACH track in both directions.
