Right Turns With a Stop

Print Article Email article to a friend »

Use these tips for right turns that require you to stop first.

  • Turn on your right turn signal well before you turn.
  • Check your mirrors.
  • Remember to always look over your shoulder to check your blind spot.
  • Search the intersection for cars, people and potential hazards. Turn your head in the direction of the turn before turning the steering wheel.
  • Accelerate slowly and steadily and begin your turn when the dashboard is even with the curb.
  • Use controlled braking and allow enough space on the right to avoid hitting the curb when turning. A good rule is to allow approximately 3 feet from the right edge of the road.
  • Be careful not to drive in parking spaces or bike lanes.
  • Straighten the car and gradually accelerate to the proper speed.
  • Check your rearview mirror as you complete your turn.

Ask your parents to help you practice turning using these tips.
